Regional Workshop in Central America to Produce
an "Information Kit" on Green Manure/Cover Crop Technologies
Workshop Date: August 17-30, 1996
Post-workshop Kit Update: September, 1996-January, 1997
Venue: Near Bethel Camp, Tegucigalpa, Honduras
Organized by:
- The International Cover Crops Clearinghouse (CIDICCO)
- Association of Advisors for a Sustainable, Ecological and Humane Agriculture (COSECHA)
- Cornell International Institute for Food, Agriculture and Development (CIIFAD)
- The International Institute for Rural Reconstruction (IIRR)
- World Neighbors
Objective: To bring together, analyze and publish a collection of
proven experiences about GMCC use that have been practiced by farmers of
Central America.
Strategy: Drawing on key informants and experiences (from farmers,
technicians, researchers) a digest of practices with potential for application
elsewhere will be prepared and critically evaluated by a diverse group of
practitioners during a two-week long workshop. The information will be
packaged in a straightforward, illustrated, highly accessible form (a kit)
which will be then distributed to farmers and/or grass root organizations.
For each experience the "kit" will include:
- detailed description of system/practice
- agroclimatic context (rainfall regime, temperature, soil types),
- socioeconomic context
- detailed management (planting date, seed quantities, etc.)
- labor use
- effects on productivity
- problems and limitations
- origin of the practice
Structure of the workshop:
Step 1: Identification, collection and scrutiny of relevant experiences. Draft prepared by key farmers and researchers and sent to organizers.
Step 2: Two-week long, participatory workshop; critical evaluation of material by participants. Following IIRR methodology, material is clarified and needed
illustrations are drawn.
Step 3: Post-production and printing phase.
Expected outputs: A collection of illustrated booklets organized by
major cropping systems (annual, perennials, etc.). (Note: technical assistance
will be provided by participating local and international organizations.)
Participants: Farmers, representatives from local NGOs, researchers, a
facilitator from IIRR (The Philippines), COMUNICA counterpart to IIRR
specialist, members of sponsoring groups.
Funding sources:
CIIFAD (Cornell University), World Bank, PASOLAC, MISEREOR
Responsibilities: CIDICCO will be the lead agency and full time
coordinator for the project. Members from various organizations (Cornell - MBA Group),
IIRR, COSECHA, World Neighbors and COMUNICA) will comprise a committee to make
major decisions regarding workshop planning, implementation and follow-up.
