MOIST's Africa Activities
-2001 Update-

During 2000-2001, MOIST supported both research and communication initiatives in Africa. Gatua wa Mbugwa carried out research on biointensive agriculture in the highlands of Kenya. His research verified the effectiveness of a package of low-external input techniques.

Support for information exchange, including both Web site and interactive electronic discussion group development, was provided during the past year for both the Cover Crops Information and Seed Exchange Center for Africa (CIEPCA) and the Rockefeller Foundation’s Soil Fertility Management Taskforce.

CIEPCA, which is affiliated the International Institute for Tropical Agriculture, contributes to the sustainable management of tropical soils by assisting researchers and development specialists to develop, target, and test appropriate cropping systems primarily in West Africa.

The Soil Fertility Management Taskforce, which operates under the aegis of the Rockefeller Foundation’s Food Security Program, focuses on restoring and improving the fertility of soils primarily in southern and eastern sub-Saharan Africa.
